When you can’t find peace

No amount of wealth or knowledge can take you to the place of eternal bliss than your inner peaceful self.”

My own peace starts with a great cup of morning tea, a meaningful conversation with wonderful people in my life, and a firm conviction to better my life each day everyday. That is a great start of a day with the hope to experience the happiness that I have always been looking for. It’s not difficult. You just have to know what makes you happy and try to find your peace in them.

We all grapple with inner turmoil, emotional tumult as well as mental agitation from time to time. Life is beautiful, mysterious, complicated, but interestingly never boring. Life as such has tremendous potential and promise. However, it does come with some serious challenges. Increasingly, those challenges impose far greater threat on the state of our being today than ever before. Back in the day I used to think that as the world enters into completely new era of technological advancement and economic growth, our lives would be much more interesting, fulfilling, joyful, and productive. The assumption was —all of us would be better off, and on a much sounder platform. People would be able to achieve their goals more efficiently and effectively and most of our everyday worries would just vanish. However, the reality turned out to be slightly different than my assumption. We are definitely able to perform some of our everyday routine more efficiently, but in no way our everyday worries have vanished. On the contrary we are more worried, edgy and restless than we earlier used to be. The contrast example is my own loving Grandma. My eighty year old Grandma is more peaceful, calm, accomplished and relaxed than most people I know and much more content with her life and her own evolution within it. She has a worldview that is slightly different than other people– she is deeply interested in real people who matter to her, real issues of life, little victories, firm beliefs, and insatiable hunger for happiness. Compared to her we are certainly more prone to modern vulnerabilities and pitfalls. Our worries keep piling up and saps us from any peace and calm that we hope for our existence. We are worried all the time. Every time. Sometimes for real and other times for imaginary problems.

The bottom line is—it is hard for us to find the calm and peace at the mental level. We are all somehow caught up in this cycle of life which is not taking us where we ideally would want to go. We are somehow in this vicious cycle of everyday routine that we all have to follow to live/exist. Furthermore, the growing gaps between aspirations and dreams have left many of us restless and at times quite stirred. Life is what brought us here, the purpose, and the significance of that purpose makes us different from each other. The purpose makes the life of one person different from another. That is the key. The purpose is the key. Increasingly, I meet people who have no idea what is the purpose of life. Their purpose is mostly material and materialistic goals. These are all material and physical aspirations and cannot be your only purpose of life. The entire crux of the problem lies here, in this very statement. Unfortunately, people have mistaken material aspirations as their purpose of life, and they somehow feel that these material possessions will take them to a place where they can have peace without disruption, and love without contamination. When the purpose itself is not pure, how will the outcome be pure? It doesn’t work that way.

Peace of mind and happiness can only be achieved, if you have a clarity of mind in regard to things, people, and places that matter to you. Ambiguous answers on any of these elements would not take you to the place where you want to go.

“Unless you know what you are looking for, it’s impossible to find what you want.”

The moment you know what you want, you can make efforts to achieve that. What is life, and what makes you happy, is what you need to know. For instance, if you consider your work as your purpose of life, are you really doing the work that you always wanted to do? Are you happy with what you are doing? Does that work give you the peace and comfort that you were looking for?  If the answer is yes, you have your happiness and peace. However, if the answer is no, then you have to reevaluate your current situation and rethink your purpose. If your mind says that given a choice you would have done things differently– you would immediately know what was missing, and what more you wanted to achieve in your life.

Achievement for me is a relative term. In general achievement is always mistaken for financial success and career growth. I see the term achievement slightly differently than rest of the people.  As a result, in my view whatever goal you have set for yourself, and whether you have achieved it or not, is your true achievement in the real sense of the term. For instance, if your goal is to be a good humanitarian, a great mother, a great friend, a great employee, a loving father, a famous person, or any category that falls under the sun, then your true purpose lies in achieving those goals. Once one or more of those goals are achieved, the purpose is served and peace will prevail. The idea to do the same thing differently is probably your purpose of life. Similarly, being loved and to love somebody is your purpose of life ,and truly so. What have you done to achieve that? What efforts have been made on your behalf to attain the love and care that you were looking for. It is not automatic. It will not come to you just like that. If you want to achieve something you have to be prepared to receive that. It’s there, and it always was, you just have to accept by receiving it. Without properly receiving it, you have no chance. It’s reciprocal.

The entire human race is programmed for the pursuit of happiness. Everyone I know is looking for just that. Have you achieved that happiness which you have been waiting to feel and experience? Both happiness and peace are interdependent: if you are happy, most likely you would be peaceful. Anything that helps you achieve happiness would help you achieve peace. The entire onus of our peace is on happiness. Therefore when you can’t find peace, think about your happiness. If you can find happiness, most certainly you would be able to find peace. The most important thing is to identify all those little elements that make you happy, it can be anything- a cool breeze that touches your soul, a flowing stream and the sound of constant youthfulness, a lit candle in dark room, sipping morning tea with the love of your life, jet setting for an extraordinary meeting, having a meaningful conversation with people who matter, breaking into dance, helping underprivileged, fluttering sound of butterfly, beautiful swan in the pond, snow that falls like pearl from the sky, success in your pursuits, dark clouds followed by rain, sunshine, solitude, beautiful children, being in love and so on. The bottom line is whatever makes you happy will make you peaceful. It’s that simple, even if you want to make it complicated.

Peace is not gone, it remains in the very fabric of our being, just needs to be found and nurtured. It is not far, just a little shy, and likes to play hide and seek, and plays little games particularly with those who have lost faith in this concept. However, all is not lost, if we want to be peaceful and content we have to be ready to receive it in its entirety. The idea is not to let our worries overwhelm us and make us feel miserable. There are certain things, events and incidents we cannot control or change the course of. Somethings are just beyond our realm of imagination and we have to accept it and make peace with it. Reality should prevail and respected at all times.  We should have the courage and excitement to stand for the things that matter to us, people who make our lives better and situations that give us pleasure and peace. It’s not that difficult to find happiness in the everyday people, places and things that surrounds us all the time. We just have to identify the right ones.
